This app is a fun color matching challenge that entails the generation of a random target color on the screen which consists of specific intensities of red, green, and blue (RGB) light mixed together. The object of the game is to find a reasonable match to the target color by determining what the three RGB intensities are within a limited number of tries. Each time one finds an acceptable match points are awarded. This might at first seem to be a trivial undertaking, however as the required accuracy of the match gets dialed in closer, it becomes an ever more difficult challenge, which demands a notable use of both left and right brain skills and abilities to find matches quick enough to score. We call this app a power play on color matching because, unlike some of the other really basic color matching apps out there, with this app you can connect with others to compete for the greatest number of points at several levels of play in a given game. Then to come out on top one needs a winning combination of both skills and tactics. The app is most suitable for ages 10 years old and up, although somewhat younger folks may be able to take on the challenges too.

Within the game there are 4 levels of play to choose from with more points given to more challenging matches (Levels) along with escalating penalties for failure to complete a color match. One can always have fun playing this game with the intent of bettering their highest score at each progressive level. Things become even more interesting however, and really amp up, when other players that also have the app connect their iOS devices to yours to easily establish a multi-player game through the local automatic bluetooth hookups that are possible with this app. Then during the game one can make a power play by going to a higher Level than their opponents, where not only are more points awarded for making a successful match, at the same time other players still at lower Levels of play may loose points when that match is made. Under multi-player matches, color matching speed, level of play, and game tactics all become involved. Playing connected games offers interactive fun and challenge that can be a great way to pass time on a trip with family and friends, or when simply hanging out together.

Power Play Color Matching is definitely a cerebral challenge involving one’s wits with a touch of chance and risk thrown into the mix. Effective play draws upon one’s short term memory tracking capabilities and abilities to pickup and recall color intensity mixing trends for specific target colors (it’s somewhat nerdy like playing Chess or Go). Don’t worry though, to keep you on your toes, this app still has simulated explosions that can happen with color match fails.

Simple color matching is an analog Seeds Software has used with great success to introduce the concepts and mathematics involved in experimental design and convergence to solutions for well over twenty years in many schools. While the Power Play Color Matching app certainly does not teach the mathematics, and is more about fun, playing it will definitely help one readily develop a keen sense and intuition of some of the principles involved. After playing with the Power Play Color Match app for a while, it’s likely one will be interested in learning how to make matches faster and with more consistency, and/or maybe even to understand some of the basic mathematics involved; in that case one can certainly step up to using our more educational focused color matching app we offer for iPads (SciMthds Search). Using the educational app one will not only get deeper insights that likely will improve matching skills, one will also learn more about experimental design. Such a study is definitely a worthwhile investment as experimental design challenges are ubiquitous throughout science, manufacturing, and everyday life, and understanding how to solve them quickly can give you an edge on more than just a game.
